Frequently Asked Questions about Water Jet Cutting at HFI

Water cutting technology
waterjet cutting
  • What are some of the materials that can be machined with water-jet technology?
  • Metals, including aluminum, copper, iron, tin, alloys, titanium, stainless steel, tungsten, steel alloys, brass, bronze, magnesium, molybdenum, zinc, nickel and cast iron. Plastics, including acrylic, nylon, thermoplastics, plexiglass, kevlar, polymers, urethane, pvc, mylar, foam, neoprene, laminates and teflon. Miscellaneous materials, including glass, ceramics, granite, linoleum, quartz, terrazo, silicon, rubber, rhenium, printed circuit boards, and bonded materials. Call for materials not listed here.

  • What thicknesses can you handle?
  • Our machines can accomodate materials ranging from .002" to 8" thick, with tolerances of +/- .005". Different materials have different cutting characteristics, so call for details that may apply for your project.

  • What sizes of stock (length and width) can you handle?
  • We can handle raw stock up to 80"x 160"

  • What design files can you handle?
  • Our software is ready to receive your DXF, DWG, IGES, and Solidworks files directly. Call for details if you're using files other than these.

  • Do you offer CAD design services?
  • Yes, because of our engineering background and our experience with water-jet machining, it can pay to talk with us in the earliest stages of your project's development. Call for information about our design capabilities.

  • Do you have minimum or maximum run size requirements?
  • No, we'll run single pieces or production runs of any number of pieces. We're determined to earn your business with not only superior quality, but with excellent service, as well.

  • Why is there no HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) with water-jet?
  • Some of our pictures here on our website show the cutting tool exposed for clarity. When cutting though, the tool is fully submerged beneath the surface of water, allowing materials like glass and plastic to be cut without the effects of heat.

  • We're concerned about edge quality. How does your process assure perpendicular cuts?
  • All of our machines feature state-of-the-art taper control technology. Call for details and to discuss this or any of your project's tolerance requirements
